If you were to only do 1 of that set, though, the Full Voice Edition is the most polished version of that trio (SNES PSX PSP). If you're into little details like that, by all means there are a bunch, so don't let me dissuade you from trying them all. Chester's more useful in the SNES version because it's easy to manipulate his AI into attacking all the time (since he doesn't have skills in that one) - but those are pretty small things compared to how long Phantasia is. In the PSX version she's kinda slow to react so she's not as useful. The cool thing about the SNES version is that Mint is incredibly on point with heals. But that's a super nerdy thing to do, so I was making a more general recommendation :)

I thought watching the series evolution was cool, so I went through them in release order a couple years ago. They do have more fleshed out characters (+1 extra) and there are some more side quests and it's a little longer and the post game dungeon is about twice the size it was before, but you might get a little bored because they're still basically the same game.

The only other thing I'd say is that the PSX (and PSP full voice edition) aren't really that different from the SNES version. The systems the games use aren't that difficult to figure out (especially if you've played an older Tales game in English before), so you should have fun. Your plan seems good, as long as you're fine playing something entirely in Japanese. But it also has no English translation available. The NDX edition of the game is, in my opinion, the best one. The battle system received a massive overhaul, spell pause is gone, a new character gets added, and the story received some very significant changes. The Narikiri Dungeon Cross edition is super different. The PSP version doesn't have an English translation though, so if ж—Ґжњ¬иЄћгЃЊиЄг‚ЃгЃЄгЃ„ you might opt for the PSX just to be able to understand it. The PSX version and the PSP Full Voice Edition are very similar, so playing the PSP one instead of the PSX one is a decent idea. It's still playable, but it's outclassed by all the other versions really hard. You're right, the GBA version is the worst one.
